Taking Responsibility = Claiming back your power

You know how many people feel unhappy about certain aspects of their life and feel stuck and unable to do something about it? Somehow it feels like a situation, a person or part of yourself is holding you back to move out of the negative patterns in your life.
I felt the same for many years. You may feel like that right now.

In this true personal story I will explain how taking responsibility for your life and happiness is in fact an act of claiming back your power. It not only feels great to do so, it also positively will change your life forever!

When I was 5 years old, both my parents died due to a car accident. This trauma had a big impact on me and on my younger sister as you can imagine. We were however taken care of by an uncle and auntie. They raised us well and loved us in any way they could. Unfortunately they got divorced a few years later when I was 9 years old.

Twice, the basic safety was swept underneath our feet. No surprise that all kind of defense mechanisms started to kick in, in order to survive. My sister and I grew up well enough with lots of support, love and therapy. Now, skipping a few years to where I was 27 years old. I had just returned to Holland after having lived abroad for a year….

Being away from your normal environment can help to see things more clearly. And what I had become painfully aware of is that my life was full of negative patterns (I hereby mean problems that kept on reappearing in my life so that I could conclude there was a pattern). For example, I could not hold a normal relationship for very long, I attracted men that were out of reach (sometimes literally with a sea or mountain ridge separating us :-) . I had difficulties with saying ‘no’ and had other boundary issues. I confused sexuality with love, I had a negative self-image and a lack of self-confidence. I was afraid for women that were distant, cold and bossy, I was afraid for making mistakes, in fact I was afraid for many more things.

Until then I had blamed my childhood traumas for all these problems in my life. Inside I could hear myself think “poor me, because all the terrible things that happened to me when I was young I am not able to live a happy life”.

Suddenly I noticed how I sounded like a victim and immediately after that realization I remembered a book that I had read from Louise Hay called ‘You can Heal Yourself’. One sentence sounded clear inside my mind: “We are all 100% responsible for our own lives”.

At that point I was aware of the fact that I had a choice:
Either I could stay a victim by blaming a situation in my past and continue to struggle in life feeling unhappy……or……I could take responsibility.

Right then I decided: I am from now on taking full responsibility of my own life and my happiness!

This was one of the biggest shifts in my life. Saying this to myself actually felt great! I felt powerful, energized and ready to take action! Now knowing all the negative patterns that I did not want anymore, I started to focus on what I did want, and at that moment, at age 27, I knew I wanted to heal and create a happy life more than anything. It had become a burning desire. And by taking responsibility I now had the courage to follow my heart. I excitedly took all the actions for getting there and ever since then I always have a basic sense of fulfillment. My life became increasingly more wonderful and I gained a sense of accomplishment as well. I overcame so many fears, I broke through so many patterns, I was amazed how my life was changing as a result of my efforts. When I changed my inner world, my outer world (the reality that I perceived) changed.

Off course I experienced many ups and downs in life since then. But through all of that I could still see how I could take charge of my life and overcome obstacles. This does not mean that I never stepped into the victim role again.

I remember one specific time when I was surprised to fall back in the victim role again because I thought I was over that. Then I discovered deep inside my attachment to the victim role!
That was a hard thing to accept, that a part of me liked being a victim, so that I could blame others and avoid responsibility, keeping myself in a false feeling of safety, not stepping out of my comfort zone. The great thing about life is that every moment is a new beginning where you can choose again.

Each time I chose to step out of the victim role and take responsibility for my life, fantastic things happened. I would courageously step out of my comfort zone, take action and adopt new positive beliefs. I now consider myself one of the happiest people in the world. This had nothing to do with luck… This had everything to do with me taking responsibility for my life and my happiness.

And if I can do it, you can do it.
Just practice with it: Honestly look at yourself and see if anywhere in your life you are blaming another person, yourself or a situation. Then realize that this victim attitude is not going to bring you the happiness you want and deserve. Decide to take full responsibility in that moment and start to create the life you want.

When you fall back into the victim role, please don’t be hard on yourself. It’s human. Just notice it as a neutral observer and choose again. Take responsibility and reclaim your power!

Coached by a horse

About half a year ago, one of my dearest friends wrote me an email about her life in Boulder, Colorado where she and her husband bought a ranch. She explained that they will start an ‘equine assisted psychotherapy’ center there. This means that a person connects with a horse and the horse mirrors the person, giving deep insights in the emotions and behavior of the person.

I knew that a horse whisperer had trained my friend and I was intrigued by this coaching technique with horses. In addition my friend expressed that she lost many pounds because of her hard work removing weeds from the many acres of ground she owns. I felt a longing to help her pick the weeds and was thinking that I wanted to know more about the coaching work with horses. However, with my busy life and her in the US…I never did take action besides thinking about it…

Now…listen to this amazing story. A few weeks ago, a new neighbor, next to my garden house, settled in for her business: Practice for personal and relational development, including training/therapy/coaching with horses….

I was stunned by the ‘coincidence’ an excited to get to know this person better. Gaudia and I exchanged mobile telephone numbers so that we could get together sometime. Yesterday morning she sent me a text if I wanted to join her and her colleague later that day seeing how they work with the horses. Off course I said Yes! What a great opportunity.

We connected very well immediately with our shared spiritual and personal development history. We couldn’t believe how special it was to meet like this.

Her colleague started first to work with a 3 year Frisian horse. While he was walking free in the paddock, she guided the horses into action (like trot or gallop), changing direction, stand still merely by body language! There was no rope attached to the horse, no whip. She did not talk to him apart from her body language. She explained how she was taking over the role of the leading stallion and the leading mare. And even though she hardly new this horse…the horse understood exactly what he had to do. It was amazing, wonderful and very loving!

In the afternoon we did a coaching session with the 27 year old horse of my new friend Gaudia. While the three of us stood in the middle of a round pen, her horse was walking free in a peaceful way. We grounded ourselves and started to become aware of various parts of our body under instruction of Gaudia.

While doing this, the horse deliberately walks up to me, indicating she wanted to work with me. She stood very close to me, touching even while I was sensing my body. I felt a bit depleted in my chest and moving towards my stomach area I could feel my tummy softening and energy starting to move while tears flow down my cheeks. I let it be there whilst the horse changes position, this time bringing her head so close to my head that her eye was right by my eye. I felt completely safe and touched by the love of this horse. Initially I felt a tendency to lean forward, to connect to the horse like symbiosis, wanting to melt together. But then the horse slightly change her posture where helping me stand more upright, without losing the connection though! Her eye was right there and I could feel her on my skin, this time I was on my own two feet, letting the emotion of sadness (missing the unconditional love of my diseased parents) flow through me. Then she moved around, placing me in the position of the Fall, she representing my mother. Glaudia told me to follow my intuition, what I wanted to do and that her horse would let me know how far I could go. So I embraced her, which she lovingly allowed. Then, when I leaned on her too much, she gently altered her position to bring me standing on my own feet again. There we stood, my stomach touching her stomach, connect to my emotions and to her loving presence. After a little while a peaceful feeling came over me and I felt we were ready.

Wow, wow, wow! To understand that a horse can help is one thing…but to experience it is a completely other level! More incredible things happened in the following coaching session. Later that afternoon Gaudia mentioned that she needed to remove a lot of weeds from the paddock….and guess what I was more than willing to help. I got exactly what I asked for J

How To Be Happy

In order to be happy, you need to live in line with your heart. This is my conclusion after having spent 20 years and a ton of money on personal and spiritual development. Which was worth gold by the way!

The best advice I ever received is “Follow you Joy!”, which means follow your passions, follow your heart. The things you love and that give you joy are to be found in your heart, not in your head. You heart holds the key.

When you follow your heart, you will live an authentic life.
When you live from your head and think about what you should be doing, what others expect of you, what is considered ‘normal’, you will loose the connection with your heart and real self.

When you do not follow your heart, you will discover that you move towards misery and suffering. There is no fulfillment to be found. Notice if you are unhappy: Am I living in line with my heart, with my deepest desires?

Maybe you feel unworthy about following your own heart, we are often conditioned to feel guilty when we choose to do what we love. Please remember it is your birthright to be happy.
I love what Janet Attwood says in her book The Passion Test: “What you love and God’s will for you are one and the same!” I know this to be true because it is my experience that whenever I choose to follow my heart and joy, the universe supports me in ways I never expected, again and again without fail.

When you follow your heart you spread love and light to others. You give other people permission to do the same. What you love is closely connected to your gifts and talents. You are meant to share these gifts to the world. In following your joy, you give joy to others. People love to be around you. When you live your authentic self according to your deepest yearnings, you will be filled with love. You will be loving to others and inspire them.

Another reason why living in line with your heart is important to your happiness is because all the qualities of your heart are coming from the source of love. And whenever you choose for love or any of the qualities of your heart, you will attract positive situations to you.

The opposite is true when we choose from our Ego. Our ego comes from the source of fear. Whenever you choose to act from fear, you will attract negative situations to you.
I know all about it, I am not perfect. It is my experience that if I react from fear or anger (ego-qualities) shit will hit the fan. The moment I realize this, I can choose again. How wonderful!
When you choose love or any other qualities of the heart like surrender, focus on gratitude or acceptance… then magical solutions appear.

Become aware of how that works in your life: Have you noticed that you never really get what you want when you react from your ego? Have you noticed how every time you act from your heart, you receive what you want and maybe even more than you expected?
Once you have experienced how living in line with your heart creates happiness in your life, it will become easier to follow your heart.

Remember: You choose!

Living Life Without A Compass

We all need a sense of purpose or direction in order to give meaning to our lives. Otherwise we live aimless, drifting like a boat on the sea with the wind blowing us in all different directions and we eventually may even hit the cliffs and end up shipwrecked.

When we have no clear direction, we get easily distracted and influenced by other people. The risk of that is that you may live a life that is not reflecting who you are. Also, not having a purpose can make you feel depressed and dull inside. And the lack of direction can cause your mind to wander, making you feel restless.

Deep inside we know our life’s purpose.  However, connecting to this message of your soul is a process that could take some time. It requires you to go deep inside your heart and listen to the message without letting the limiting monkey mind interfere. This is why professional help from a certified passion test facilitator can be of great value.

Even though we might not know what our life purpose is, your passions are like breadcrumbs that lead you in the right direction. Therefore knowing your passions will serve as a compass. In following your heart you will find this deeper sense of fulfillment. It is not only the destination but the road towards it that will bring you joy.

Discover your passions and give direction to your life NOW.

The Importance Of Passion

Passion is incredibly important. The deep longing, the desire that springs from the heart of each person gives drive, motivation. When you follow your passions you will experience joy and fulfillment. Each person has unique talents and gifts to offer to the world. When you deviate from the path of your passions, you will likely become unhappy. Thank goodness that everybody’s passions are so unique and different. There is room for everyone to live the life they want.

The most important reason why people don’t get what they want is because they don’t know what they want. If you are not clear about what you want, you are easily distracted and your energy will go in all different directions. No clarity, no focused attention. Vague intentions will produce vague results.

Many people don’t take the time to find out what it is they really want. It is easier to make a shopping list than honestly look at your life and find in your heart your deepest desires. It feels safer to stay in the life that is familiar to us, even though it is not making us truly happy.

Knowing your passions will make you want to live them, this might require you to leave your comfort zone. Your brain isn’t keen on changes either, it often requires the making of new neural pathways, and therefore a natural resistance to change is natural. If you want to settle for a life of mediocrity, that’s your choice. However, if you are ready to co-create the life you want, you better find out what truly gives you joy.

Interviews with successful people in the US show that they all have one thing in common: They are all living their top five passions. Are you living yours?

The Passion Test will help you discover your top five passions. This means these are the five things that you feel are most important to you. They can be covering all different areas in your life. From a list of 10 of your passions you will follow a system created by Janet Attwood, that will make you choose your top 5 passions from your heart. Further, you will learn about important principles and a secret formula that will guarantee you can live a passionate life. Learn more about The Passion Test here.

Very often people say they already know what they want, but often we find that when doing the passion test they surprise themselves with a different outcome.  Because you are being guided to make choices based from your heart you sink deeper and deeper and find the answers that bypass the limited mind and access the deeper truth of your heart.  Systematically following the system will not allow you to take short cuts or skipping by saying you know it all. Also your passions can change over time, depending on what life brings on your way. So it is wise to take the Passion Test about every 6 months. Once you are familiar with the process you can do it yourself at any given time. However, being guided -at least once- by a certified facilitator is recommendable since your ego might trick you and get you to answer from your head rather than your heart. The homework exercises will help you to become even more clear and specific. Remember, clarity is power.

Things That Hold You Back

There are several things that can hold you back from living your passions.

You might think that you don’t have any passions because you don’t have big dreams. Please realize this:

Your dreams don’t need to be big. Whatever it is that makes you feel happy is perfect. Janet Attwood says in her book The Passion Test: What you want and God’s will for you are one and the same. You are deserving and meant to live a life of joy and fulfillment. I say: What I want for you is what you want for you.

No matter how small or big your dreams are, the passion test will help you get clear. How are you going to create the life you want if you don´t know what you want?

No matter who you are and what your life is like at the moment, or whatever your age is, it is always possible to have a more happy and fulfilling life.

The first step is to gain clarity about what is most important to you right now.

With the Passion Test 1on1 you will already get clear on your top 5 passions in the first session!

Most of the time it’s the negative beliefs that are keeping people from living their passions. Negative beliefs like: I am not good enough, I am too old, I don’t believe my dreams can come true.

Having negative beliefs indicates that you are worrying about HOW to live your passions. Don’t worry about the HOW. The important thing is getting clear about the WHAT it is you want. What you want in life will show up, and only to the extent that you are clear.

One of the things we do in the second session is looking at our limiting beliefs.

We often limit ourselves incredibly without even being fully aware it. Once you are clear about what you want, false beliefs, false ideas and false concepts are the only things that stand in the way of you living a passionate life. It is my experience that the universe will support you always when you follow your joy. Yes, it does take a leap of faith, but you will find that whenever you follow your heart, life will provide you with everything you need.

After having taken the Passion Test, you can start living your passions straight away.

Guidance from a mentor can be helpful when you feel like you lack confidence, energy or knowledge how to proceed. That is why Bernardine offers a special Co Creator mentoring program designed to support you in realizing your dreams.
